Youth Photography Exchange

ABOUT!

The Youth Photography Exchange is a six-month art program for youth (15-19) in Canada and Germany who want to explore storytelling through photography. From October 2025 to February 2026, participants will connect across borders, share ideas, and create projects that reflect their unique perspectives.

Program Highlights:

  • Interactive workshops on photography and visual storytelling

  • Guided photo-walks in Victoria and online sessions

  • Cross-cultural partner projects between youth in Germany and Canada

  • Independent photo projects exploring personal and social themes

  • A final virtual exhibition open to an international audience

You don’t need professional experience: just curiosity, creativity, and an interest in connecting with others. Victoria-based participants will also receive a $250 honorarium.

The program concludes with youth developing photo stories based on core themes such as Home & Migration, Youth & Leadership, Traditions & Change, Environmental Justice, and Connection Across Distance, allowing each participant to express their experiences and identities through a creative lens.

At the end of the program, youth will receive a certificate of completion and the opportunity to showcase their photographs in a virtual gallery.

Youth Photography Photo Walk

We had our first Youth Photography Project Photo Walk, exploring míqәn (“warmed by the sun”), known today as Beacon Hill Park, on the traditional territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən Peoples.

The youth practiced seeing their surroundings through a creative lens; working with framing, leading lines, and the rule of thirds as they captured the beauty of fall.

A big thank-you to everyone who joined and helped make this such an inspiring day behind the camera!

Exploring Visual Storytelling

In our most recent Youth Photography Workshop, participants explored visual storytelling, discovering how composition, colour, angle, and lighting shape the emotions and narratives behind an image. Michelle led a great session on the rule of thirds and framing, and the youth took part in an identity-mapping activity to reflect on their own stories.

We also introduced our project themes, including Home & Migration, Youth & Leadership, Traditions & Change, Environmental Justice, and Connection Across Distance.
