Why We Changed Our Name
In 1989, a group of young people started the Vancouver Island Public Interest Research Group (VIPIRG). At the time, community-based research was a new concept and we spearheaded multiple groundbreaking research projects. Fast forward 30 years, our research is recognized locally and around the world. We continue to empower vulnerable youth through research, education, and advocacy.
In August 2019, we terminated our operating agreement with the University of Victoria Students' Society. In the months leading up to that decision, our staff, volunteers, and supporters examined the future of the Public Interest Research Group model in Canada, the changing climate of non-profits, and how to best position ourselves for success over the next 30 years and beyond.
During these discussions, one thing became clear—we are not the same organization that we were 30 years ago. Like most successful organizations, we continue to evolve and find ways to ensure that we are fulfilling our mission.
To continue to do this work well, we realized the need for more compelling communications and a name that connects with community needs and accurately reflects our mission over the past 30 years - research, education, and advocacy for the most vulnerable.
Today, we are proud to introduce our new brand that has emerged from this process: Coastal Research, Education, and Advocacy Network (CREAN). Our new name spells out the services we are so proud to provide, and our new logo is evocative of the beautiful colours of the West Coast.
