Essential Time Off: Building Culturally Safe Workspaces

  • 990 Hillside Avenue Victoria, BC, V8T 1Z7 Canada (map)

Join us for a community conversation and knowledge-sharing event hosted by the Coastal Research, Education, and Advocacy Network (CREAN). This event shares findings from our research project, Essential Services vs. Essential Time Off, exploring how workplaces in Victoria can better support Indigenous employees.

Our study highlights the challenges Indigenous workers face when trying to take time off for important cultural and spiritual practices, like powwows, sun dances, grief ceremonies, and other traditions. Too often, employees must choose between their jobs and honouring their cultural identity, leading to stress, burnout, and limited leadership opportunities.

In partnership with Oodenaw Consulting, Indigenous employees, and employers, CREAN has gathered stories, data, and solutions. At this event, we’ll share what we’ve learned and invite dialogue on how employers, community members, and policymakers can build more equitable workplaces for all.
