Coastal Research, Education and Advocacy Network (CREAN) is hosting a summer book club called The Other Bookshelf to deepen our understanding of issues around racism through popular works of fiction and non-fiction! Join us as we converse with educators for our second book club session on Thursday, September 16.
Using books, we hope to learn practices to level the playing field for BIPOC students. This book club will be an opportunity for educators to embrace antiracist teaching, advocate for social justice education, promote systemic equitable policies, and how to collaborate with community partners to uplift marginalized students and families.
The Other Bookshelf book club is an opportunity for educators to 1) read anti-racist texts, 2) discuss how we can be practice anti-racism in our classrooms, and 3) support one another in anti-racist education.
For this session, the books we will read and discuss are:
1. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
2. Hearts Unbroken by Cynthia Leitich Smith
