Millie's Lane Block Party
On September 27th, 2024, Coastal Research, Education, and Advocacy Network hosted a Block Party in Millie’s Lane, with the aim of bringing together local businesses and the surrounding community. Millie’s Lane Block Party was an evening of celebration, filled with live music, free food, engaging speakers, diverse vendors, and local businesses.
Throughout the night, the event welcomed over 150 attendees. 85 free meals were served to the community, courtesy of Stir it Up, a vibrant Caribbean restaurant nestled in the alley. Local shops in the alleyway – including Cheers Vintage, Cinevic, Fan Favourites Games&Movies, and The Union Tattoo – welcomed visitors with their doors open to engage with the event.
The event was MC-ed by a youth, passionate about anti-racism activism. Over the course of the evening, a variety of musicians enriched the environment with their live music; a diverse range of musical talent was shared, including folk, jazz, celtic, and music by a local DJ. Local artisan vendors shared their work, including baked goods and handcrafted art.
The Block Party contributed to the rich history of the alley. The walkway was previously known as “Odeon Alley” for its proximity to the Odeon Theatre, however, was renamed Millie’s Lane in honour of Millie Hawkes. Millie was a beloved and longtime operator of Manton Shoe Repair, a shop that opened onto the lane. Through events like the Block Party, CREAN Society aims to recognize the unique history of the alley, support local businesses, and unite the surrounding community.
The event was sponsored by the Government of Canada with support from the Downtown Victoria Business Association.
“Without community there can be no commerce, the goal of this event was to showcase how vibrant and eclectic Millie’s Lane can be, by including the people and businesses to create a positive identity of our alley way.”
