"PIRGs are extremely important resources for students and community members to work together on issues of social and environmental justice, and for students to collectively pool their resources to be of benefit to the broader community. Through my community work I have supervised and mentored multiple students through VIPIRG to support their engagement in community based research. As a member of the VIPIRG Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Working Group from 1997-1998 I witnessed the power of students and community members coming together to learn collectively how to do decolonization work; many of the working relationships formed in that initiative endure today. VIPIRG's community grants have supported many grassroots initiatives and have particularly been important in supporting small scale projects that just need a bit of money to get going, as well as supporting accessibility measures like bus tickets to make sure that people living in poverty (including students) can participate. VIPIRG's anti-poverty projects have been tremendously influential in the community, both on the research front and on the ground; as a community advocate I frequently use past VIPIRG research reports on police violence and shortage of affordable housing stock in my work with grassroots groups and in lobbying politicians, and many of the homeless people who I work with have benefited from the Cool Aid dental clinic that was established through VIPIRG research. I have attended VIPIRG conferences both as a speaker and participant and valued the opportunity to learn from students and the broader community. The VIPIRG coordinating collective is an important opportunity for students to learn about and practice governance skills."

"I worked at VIPIRG for two years in the role of Research Coordinator, and came to feel that VIPIRG has a unique niche in UVIC's campus ecology. Countless students have had a chance to experiment and learn alternative ways of relating, organizing and researching at VIPIRG over the years."
